At some point in every amateur photographer’s life, he or she reaches a decision…

Do they continue with their tried and trusted point-and-click camera, that has served them well up to now, or take their photography to a new level; polish their skills, introduce some more creativity and upgrade their equipment?

At this point people usually start looking at digital SLR cameras and the choice always seems to come down to Nikon or Canon.

Personally, I have always used Canons I think that the Cannon Rebel Camera is the best entry-level “serious” camera that you can buy.

Once you have decided to buy a digital  SLR there are some basic things you need to consider:

  • How are you planning to use the camera (portraits, landscapes, architectures, night shots, holiday shots, sports and action photography or more artistic, creative shots)
  • Battery life. Modern rechargeable battery packs typically lose about 1% of the charge everyday so if you leave it for an extended period without recharging, the battery may be flat when you come use it. It’s best to have at least one spare battery pack so that you can alternate and keep both of them in tip top shape
  • Do you want an LCD or optical viewfinder
  • How does the camera feel? Is it solidly built? Does it feel good? In addition, is comfortable to use
  • What kind of lenses should you buy? This is a tricky one; many people spend a significant amount of money on lenses that never leave the case. The Cannon Rebel Camera comes with a good starter lens (18 to 55 mm) so I would recommend using that for one to two months until you get used to the way that the camera performs. Once you are comfortable with the camera then consider buying additional lenses.
  • Memory cards. This is the easiest decision of the whole process, just by the largest capacity card you can afford. Memory card technology means that prices are decreasing rapidly and you can now get 2 GB SD card for less than $10.
  • Burst mode. If you like taking panoramic, macro level photos then you probably need a burst mode.
  • Carrying cases. I prefer to go with a non-name brand case. It is less conspicuous and as a good digital SLR will cost almost $1000, anything that helps to keep it safe is a good thing. There are really only four things to check for; it needs to have strong stitching and adequate padding, it needs to have enough storage space to carry your filters, lenses and spare batteries and, if you travel a lot want to consider a hard case.

  1. That rss page on your website here is magnificent, you should tell more folks about it in your next post. I haven’t noted it for the first couple of times, now I’m using it every morning to check on any updates. I’m on a very slow dial-up link in Brazil and it’s quite discouraging to sit there and wait for such a long time ’til the page loads… but hey, I just found your rss page and added it to the Google Reader and there you are… I’m always up-to-date! Well pal, keep up the good work and make that rss button a little bigger so that other people can enjoy that as well :-P
